SCAM ALERT - Family Phone Scam Targeting Local Residents
Throughout 2010 and 2011 numerous residents of Smiths Falls have been contacted by telephone in attempts to defraud them of money.
The suspects usually state they are long lost relatives in trouble with the law and they need the money for bail or to pay legal fees. The suspects usually ask for the money to be wired.
The exact nature of the scam does vary but generally the suspects will indicate they need the money as soon as possible. The suspects will make it seem urgent so there is little time to confirm their story.
The suspects may have done enough research to have some personal information to make the call seem authentic. For example, the suspects may give the name of an actual relative. Local residents have reported the suspects did in fact have some accurate personal information and seemed very convincing.
This scam is being operated nation wide and anyone who receives such calls are advised not to pay any money and to contact our service at 613-283-0357. Information may also be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS(8477).
