Victim and Witness Services 1 Seek Immediate Medical and Police Aid Medical attention is extremely important after an assault, even if you do not have any apparent injuries. Only a nurse or physician can properly examine you to determine your injuries and administer the correct treatment. The nurse or physician can also advise you on tests for sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) and / or pregnancy. You may seek 24 hour assistance at the Emergency Department of the Smiths Falls Hospital (613) 283-2330. As soon as possible, it is also recommended that you call the police to report your victimization. A police officer will promptly respond to your residence or the hospital to meet with you. The police officer may also arrange for you to be transported to the hospital. Contact the Smiths Falls Police Service at (613) 283-4141. Important: Victims of Sexual Assault While at the hospital, you may be asked if you want to have a Sexual Assault Evidence Kit completed. The SAEK is a physical exam for the purpose of gathering evidence for the police. The evidence may or may not be used in court. It is your choice whether or not you have a Sexual Assault Evidence kit completed. But remember, medical attention is important for your own personal care. If you do chose to have a Sexual Assault Evidence Kit completed, it will be done at the hospital by a doctor and / or specially trained nurse. If you choose, a sexual assault worker will stay with you during the exam to provide support. The exam may take a while to complete. It is very thorough and extensive for the purpose of gathering evidence. However, you always have the option of asking for the exam to be stopped at any point. Although this examination is invasive, your well-being and comfort will always be considered. If you have any questions or concerns about anything, feel free to ask the doctor, nurse, or sexual assault worker at any time. Remember: You always have the right to slow down or stop the collection of evidence procedure. Note: If you need transportation to the hospital, the police officer, sexual assault Center, or the hospital can help with arrangements. You may also want to bring a change of clothing to the hospital with you. Step 2 Your Involvement with the Police
