3.2 Victim Witness Assistance Program (VWAP)
Victim Support Line (VSL)
The Victim Support Line (VSL) is an initiative conducted by the Ministry of the Attorney General. The VSL is a comprehensive telephone service available toll-free 24 hours a day to all victims of crime in Ontario. Through the toll-free number, victims of crime have around the clock access to three services:
Support and Services Line
By dialing the Support and Services line, victims will be put in contact with an information counselor. The counselor will then refer the victim to community services and crisis agencies in the Lanark County area that can help the victim manage and overcome their victimization experience.
Victim Notification System
In cases where the person who harmed you is incarcerated in a provincial jail, you may register with the Victim Notification System to receive automated voice messages by phone any time there is a change in the incarceration status of an offender. Specifically, you can request information such as: parole hearing dates, decisions to release or deny parole; temporary absences; transfers to other jurisdictions and/or escapes or failures to return from leave.
Criminal Justice System Information
As a victim, this may be your first interaction with the criminal justice system. You may have anxieties or questions about the procedures and chain of events leading from the arrest and the laying of charges, to the trial, and the subsequent release or incarceration of an offender. By dialing the Victim Support Line, you may access a voice-recorded message which explains the operation of the criminal justice system. The aim of this line is to help familiarize victims with the justice system in order to lessen the fear that they may have about attending court.
