CDSA drug warrant executed

On Friday the 22nd of October 2021 Smiths Falls Police, Ottawa Police Guns and Gang unit and OPP CSCU team executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act search warrant at a residence on Elmsley St. During the five month long investigation by Ottawa Guns and Gangs they linked this Smiths Falls address as one having connection to drug trafficking that stemmed from the Ottawa area.  

Charged jointly with the following;

Possession for the Purpose of trafficking and possession (fentanyl), possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession  (Cocaine), Possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession (hydromorphone), possession for the purpose of trafficking Schedule 3 and possession (methylphenidate), possession of a prohibited weapon (pepper spray), breach of a court order and breach of probation. Police also laid charges of possession of property obtained by crime after locating a boat motor in the residence that had been reported stolen from a business in the Smiths Falls area Oct 11th. The boat and trailer had been recovered but the motor had not. It was valued at over $12,000.

Joseph James (JJ) Bancroft (age 44) of Smiths Falls and Katelyn Beckstead (age 27) were charged with all the above mentioned offences. They were both later released at a bail hearing on conditions to abide by.

Male charged with breaching his release order

On the 14th of October 2021 the accused before the courts, John Perry (age 49) of Smiths Falls was released after a bail hearing to abide by conditions to reside in Gatineau. He never showed. Police arrested the male on the 24th of October 2021 after receiving a complaint that he was at a friends’ residence causing damage to the front windows.    

Charged with 3 counts of failing to comply with release order, mischief damaging property is 49 year old John Perry. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Driving complaint leads to impaired driving charges

On Monday October 11, 2021 at approximately 2:21 p.m., police received a call from a concerned motorist in regards to a vehicle travelling southbound on highway 15 north and entering the Town of Smiths Falls.  Police located and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

Investigation revealed that the driver, 32 year old Gurjot BHINDER, of Smiths Falls, was impaired by alcohol and was subsequently placed under arrest. 

BHINDER stands charged with: Impaired driving and Impaired driving by having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80 milligrams.  His driver’s licence was suspended for a period of 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 7 days as a result.

BHINDER was later released and will appear in court at a future date to answer to these charges.

Traffic stop leads to impaired driving charges

On Tuesday October 12, 2021 at approximately 12:31 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop on Elmsley Street North for a traffic violation.  Investigation revealed that the driver, 58 year old, William WILKINSON, of Lombardy, was impaired by alcohol and subsequently placed under arrest. WILKINSON refused to provide samples of his breath to police upon demand. 

WILKINSON stands charged with:  Impaired driving, Refusing to provide samples of his breath and a breach of a court ordered release condition.  His driver’s licence was suspended for a period of 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 7 days as a result.

WILKINSON was held for a bail hearing to answer to these outstanding charges.

Motor vehicle collision leads to impaired driving charges

On Wednesday October 13, 2021 at approximately 8:37 p.m., police received a call for a two vehicle motor vehicle accident on Abbott Street North.  Investigation revealed that the driver, 54 year old, Mary WILSON, of Smiths Falls, was impaired by alcohol and subsequently placed under arrest.

WILSON stands charged with:  Impaired driving and Impaired driving by having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80 milligrams.  Her driver’s licence was suspended for a period of 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 7 days as a result.

Male arrested for domestic related offences

On Thursday October 14, 2021, at approximately 9:15 a.m., police located and arrested a 20 year old male suspect, of Kingston, Ontario, for unwanted contact with his ex-partner.  The suspect was also found to have breached two of his Probation Order release conditions. 

The suspect stands charged with one count of Criminal Harassment and two counts of breaching his Probation Order release conditions.  The suspect was held for a bail hearing to answer to these charges against him.

Males arrested for theft

On the 22nd of September 2021 a 33 year old male was arrested and later released from stealing product from a local store. He is to appear in court at a later date.

On this same date- a 32 year old Smiths Falls resident was also identified as another male who allegedly was stealing product from a local store. On the 27th of September 21 this same male was identified leaving the scene of an accident after striking a house on Aberdeen Ave with his vehicle. He fled the area prior to police arrival.

On the 29th of September 21 a plain clothed officer observed the suspect in a pick-up truck at the intersection of Lombard and Beckwith St. The vehicle was blocked in by police, the male ran from the police but was arrested in a yard on Brockville St. The accused continued to resist arrest. Charged with theft, drive disqualified, drive under suspension, fail to report accident, 4 counts of failing to comply with an undertaking, 2 counts of breach of a probation order, 2 counts of resisting arrest of a peace officer and 1 count of possession of a controlled substance is 32 year old Jordon Wilkinson of Smiths Falls. He’s currently in custody pending a bail hearing.

Male arrested for failing to comply

On the 6th of September 2021 the accused 30 year old Lyle Daye was arrested for trespassing by night after allegedly going through other people’s yards. He was released to abide by a curfew. On the 24th of September 21 he was checked by police and was not in his residence. A warrant was sought and the accused was arrested on the 7th of October 21. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Traffic stop leads to foot pursuit and arrest

On the 28th of September 21 an officer attempted to stop a motor vehicle on Queen St when two males fled. They were quickly apprehended. Charged with drive disqualified is 37 year old  Elmer Miller of Oxford Mills and arrested on an outstanding Ottawa Police domestic warrant was a 37 year old Smiths Falls resident.  

Traffic stop leads to arrest;

On the 7th of October 2021 50 year old John Perry was arrested at a traffic stop for drive while under suspension. Investigation revealed the male was in breach of a release order and further was in possession of a controlled substance. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.     

Numerous Mischief and harassment charges laid

Over the summer months and fall, police have been investigating written derogatory messages towards different police officers in and around the park areas.

On the 7th of October 21 a report was made about a male criminally harassing and threatening a female property manager on Main St W.

Police were able to link the accused to these events and charge him with 15 counts of mischief, 3 counts of failing to comply with probation, 2 counts of resisting arrest, 2 counts of criminal harassment and 1 count of uttering a death threat. 63 year old Steven Stoddard of Smiths Falls is currently in custody pending a bail hearing.

Male arrested for prescription fraud

On Friday September 24, 2021, at approximately 5:25 p.m., police attended a Pharmacy for a report of a male suspect attempting to fill a fraudulent prescription.  Investigation revealed that a fraudulent prescription had been dropped off at the Pharmacy several weeks prior.  The suspect, a 21 year old, of Ottawa, was placed under arrest.  The suspect was also found to be in possession of a sharp edged weapon, contrary to his Probation release order condition.  

The suspect stands charged with one count of Fraud Under $5000.00, one count of breaching his Probation release order condition and was held for a bail hearing to answer to these charges. 

Domestic disturbance leads to charges

On Saturday September 25, 2021, at approximately 5:40 a.m., police responded to a domestic disturbance in progress at an Empress Avenue residence.  Investigation revealed that a 44 year old male suspect, and his female partner were engaged in a heated argument.  During this argument the suspect had threatened to damage her personal property and did damage personal property belonging to his partner.

As a result, the suspect was placed under arrest and is charged with one count of Uttering Threat to Damage Property and one count of Mischief Under $5000.00.  The suspect was held for a bail hearing to answer to these outstanding charges. 

Male charged with numerous domestic related offences

On Monday September 27, 2021, at approximately 11:27 a.m., police located and arrested a 24 year old male suspect, of no fixed address for numerous domestic related offences.  Investigation revealed that the suspect had contacted his former romantic partner, followed her in a vehicle, and attended her residence on several occasions while being prohibited by a Probation Order release condition.  The suspect also threatened to cause damage to the victim’s personal property and had communicated with the victim’s friends.  While being placed under arrest, the suspect resisted officers and uttered threats to damage to the officer’s personal property.

As a result the suspect is charged with the following:  Fail to Comply with Probation Order x3, Criminal Harassment, Resist Peace Officer and Uttering Threats to Damage Property x3.  The suspect was held for a bail hearing to answer to these outstanding charges.

Increase in daytime break and enters and unlocked vehicles being entered

We have had several complaints of daytime break and enters into residences over the past few weeks.  Please be vigilant in locking all doors and ground level windows.  If you observe anyone suspicious in your neighbourhood, please call our non-emergency phone number (613) 283-0357 to report it.  As per the Town’s bylaw, any agency or organization must be approved and have proper identification in order to conduct door to door contact. 

We have also received several complaints from the public of unlocked vehicle’s being entered and personal belongings being stolen.  Please also take the extra few seconds to keep any valuables out of sight if they are being kept inside your vehicle, roll up all windows and ensure all doors are locked.  If you observe anyone suspicious around a vehicle, please call our non-emergency phone number.

Male arrested for domestic related offences

On Monday September 20, 2021, at approximately 3:20 p.m., police were called to attend a Lombard Street residence for a possible domestic disturbance in progress.  Investigation revealed that a 21 year old male suspect, of Smiths Falls, had assaulted his common law partner and damaged her personal belongings.  The female victim suffered minor injuries as a result.

The suspect was placed under arrest, held for a bail hearing and stands charged with:  Assault with a weapon, Assault and Mischief Under $50000.00.

***OCTOBER 1, 2021 UPDATE***

Police have received confirmation of the identity of the deceased, whose remains were located in a wooded area off of William Street West, on September 20, 2021. The deceased was identified as, 38 year old, Gregory MORYAS, of Smiths Falls. Mr. MORYAS was reported missing to our Police Service on July 13, 2021. No foul play is suspected in his death. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Police Presence on William St W The Smiths Falls Police Service are investigating the discovery of human remains in a wooded area on William St W. The remains were discovered yesterday afternoon at about 4:30 pm by a citizen cycling in the area. There will be heavy police presence with the assistance of the OPP and the Coroner’s Office in conducting a thorough search and gathering of evidence. The public is asked to stay clear of the area and to use caution if having to drive in this area. The investigation is ongoing and may be linked to a missing person report from July 2021. More information will be released pending further investigation and the identity of the remains is confirmed.

Male arrested for breaching release condition

On Monday September 13, 2021, a 44 year old male suspect, of Smiths Falls, turned himself into police for an outstanding breach of his court imposed release condition, stemming from a domestic related incident.  While in custody, the suspect tampered with the fire suppression system in cells, causing damage and flooding to the cell block area.

As a result, the suspect stands charged with one count of breaching his court release condition and one count of mischief under $5000.00.  The suspect was held for a bail hearing to answer to these charges.

Suspicious persons call leads to numerous charges

On Sunday September 19, 2021 at approximately 2:39 a.m., police received a 9-1-1 call to attend a residence on Bourke Street for a report of two males attempting to gain entry into parked vehicles.  Police attended and located one male youth and one male adult in the immediate area.  Both were advised of the complaint and reason for police interaction.  Both males provided false names, dates of birth and addresses when asked.  Both suspects were subsequently placed under arrest and were found to have break in tools on their person. 

As a result both stand charged with: Prowl By Night, Obstruct Police, Possession of Break in Tools and were later released by way of a Promise to Appear with a future court date to answer to these charges.

Domestic disputes lead to arrests

A 25 year old male was released at a bail hearing on the 16th of August 2021 after threatening, assaulting and confining a female he was involved in a relationship with. He will appear in court at a later date.

A 34 year old male was also released at a bail hearing on the 26th of August 2021 after unlawfully in a dwelling, assault and threats towards an ex-spouse. He will also appear in court at a later date.  

A 30 year old male was arrested on the 8th of September 2021 after police responded to a domestic related mischief call. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.  

Male sells narcotics to a plain clothes officer

On the 27th of August 2021 50 year old Wayne Mallory was arrested in front of a local business after attempting to allegedly sell prescriptions to a plain clothed officer. Mallory was charged with trafficking in a schedule 1 substance- hydromorphone, possession for the purpose of trafficking in hydromorphone and breach of a release order. He was later released at bail court for a later court date. 

Male released at bail hearing after theft reports

On the 4th of September 2021 Smiths Falls Police arrested 23 year old Dustin AMOS for offences relating to theft, breach of release order after investigating a bike that he allegedly rode out of the store making no effort to pay for it.

The Smiths Falls Police Service have responded or initiated over 529 calls for service in the last two weeks.

Female arrested for assaulting family members

On Wednesday July 21, 2021 at approximately 8:04 p.m., police attended a residence on Main Street for a report of an assault.  Investigation revealed, that a 25 year old female suspect, of Smiths Falls, attended the residence and assaulted a male and female resident, uttered threats and damaged property.  The suspect was found to be related to both victims. 

The suspect was located outside of the residence, arrested and stands charged with the following:  Unlawfully in Dwelling, Uttering threats x3, Assault x3 and one count of Mischief under $5000.00.  The suspect was held for a bail hearing to answer to these outstanding charges against her.

Female arrested for shoplifting at local businesses

On Monday July 26, 2021 at approximately 8:31 p.m., police received a call for a shoplifter at a Lombard Street business.  Investigation revealed that a 32 year old female suspect, of Smiths Falls, was responsible for thefts at several Lombard Street businesses spanning over a several week period. 

The suspect was arrested on scene and is charged with 7 counts of Theft Under $5000.00, was later released by way of an Undertaking and will appear in court at a future date to answer to these charges.

Male arrested for breaching his release condition

On Tuesday July 27, 2021 at approximately 10:04 a.m., police located and arrested a 43 year old male suspect, of Smiths Falls, for breaching his court ordered release condition of communicating with his ex-partner.  Investigation revealed that the suspect had sent numerous messages by way of electronic means to the victim.

The suspect is charged with one count of failing to comply with his court ordered release condition and was held for a bail hearing to answer to this charge.

Neighbour dispute results in charges

On Tuesday July 27, 2021 at approximately 3:13 p.m., police were called to attend a Russell Street East residence for a report of an assault.  Investigation revealed that a 26 year old male suspect and 23 year old female suspect attended their neighbour’s residence complaining about the volume of the music being played.  During this confrontation the male victim was assaulted by both the male and female suspects.  

Both suspects were located, arrested and stand charged with one count of assault each and later released by way of an Undertaking and will appear in court at a future date to answer to these charges.

Male arrested for breaching his release condition

On Tuesday July 27, 2021 at approximately 8:46 p.m., police received a complaint in regards to a male suspect who had breached his release conditions.  Investigation revealed that the 27 year old male suspect, of Smiths Falls, had sent numerous electronic messages to his ex-partner and was in contravention of his court imposed release conditions. 

The suspect was located, arrested and is charged with one count of breaching his recognizance of bail release condition.  The suspect was held for a bail hearing to answer to this charge. 

Male arrested for uttering threat

On Tuesday July 27, 2021 at approximately 5:06 p.m., police located and arrested a 49 year old male suspect of Perth, Ontario, for uttering a threat.  Police received a complaint on July 17, 2021 to attend a business on Center Street, after the threat was made.  Investigation revealed that the suspect had engaged in a verbal argument with two females known to him and after this exchange he uttered a threat to the victim who was an innocent bystander.

The suspect is charged with one count of Uttering a Threat to Cause Death and was later released by way of an Undertaking with conditions and will appear in court at a future date to answer to this charge.

Charges laid after vehicle stolen at gunpoint

In the early morning hour of the 14th of July 2021 the Smiths Falls Police were involved in a pursuit after a work van was stolen at gunpoint on Beckwith St N. This set off a multi- jurisdictional dangerous chain of events involving this male accused. This male was identified and later arrested by the Lanark County OPP approximately 12 hours later. 

For the investigation that had occurred within the town of Smiths Falls, Smiths Falls Police have charged 28 year old Dylan John Meulmeester of Ottawa with the following:  

Pointing a firearm

Imitation firearm committing robbery

Weapons dangerous

Motor vehicle theft over $5,000

Flight from police

Dangerous operation

Operation while prohibited

Firearm possession contrary to prohibition order

Drive while under suspension

5 Counts of breaching a release order.

Meulmeester has an extensive criminal record spanning different jurisdictions and was also on outstanding court release orders at the time of this offence. Police confirmed that it was a pellet gun used in the offences. Meulmeester was held in custody for bail and has been remanded for further investigation.
